How Walmart Marketplace fees work
Walmart Marketplace doesn't charge setup or monthly fees. Its main cost is a referral fee on each item sold, a percentage that depends on the item's category. The fee is charged on the total sales price, which Walmart defines as the item price plus shipping and handling, gift wrap and other charges, excluding taxes that are stated and charged separately.
Many categories use a flat rate: 15% for categories such as home and kitchen, toys, pet supplies and books, 12% for automotive and musical instruments, 10% for tires and plumbing, 8% for consumer electronics and camera and photo, and 6% for personal computers. Other categories are tiered, and Walmart uses two different kinds of tier:
- Whole-price brackets. One rate applies to the entire total sales price, chosen by how high that price is. Apparel pays 5% at $15 or less, 10% between $15 and $20, and 15% above $20. Baby and beauty products pay 8% at $10 or less and 15% above, grocery pays 8% at $15 or less and 15% above, and outdoor power tools pay 15% up to $500 and 8% above.
- Portion tiers. A higher rate applies to the first part of the price and a lower rate only to the amount above the threshold. Jewelry pays 20% on the first $250 and 5% on the rest; watches 15% up to $1,500 and 3% above; electronics accessories 15% up to $100 and 8% above; furniture 15% up to $200 and 10% above; and compact appliances 12% up to $300 and 8% above.
The difference matters. An apparel item with a $15.00 total sales price pays $0.75, but at $15.01 the 10% rate covers the whole price and the fee roughly doubles to $1.50. With a portion tier, a jewelry piece at $300 pays 20% on $250 plus 5% on $50, or $52.50, never the higher rate on the full amount.
If you use Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS), Walmart also charges a per-unit fulfillment fee that depends on your item's weight and size, plus storage. Because that rate card is detailed and changes, the calculator asks you to enter your per-unit WFS fee from Walmart's rate card or cost estimator rather than guessing it.

How to use this Walmart fee calculator
Choose the category that matches your item; each option shows its rate and tiers. If Seller Center shows a different rate for your item, for example through a reduced referral fee incentive, choose "Other / enter my own rate". Enter the item price and any shipping charged to the buyer, which counts toward both the fee and the tier thresholds. If Walmart fulfills the order, add the WFS fee per unit and set your own shipping cost to 0.
Then enter your item cost, the shipping cost you pay when you fulfill orders yourself, and other costs such as packaging, prep or advertising per order. The results list the referral fee with the amount it was charged on, total fees, net payout, profit, margin and ROI. The break-even price and target price account for tiers, and where a lower bracket makes a cheaper price profitable too, the calculator shows that price window.
Worked example: a $32 home item with $4 shipping
Using the default numbers, a $32 item in Home, Kitchen, Decor & Garden sells with $4 shipping charged, so the total sales price is $36. The item costs $10, you pay $6 to ship it and packaging adds $1, for $17 in costs.
- Referral fee: 15% × $36.00 = $5.40
- Total fees: $5.40, or 15.0% of revenue
Net payout is $30.60 and profit is $13.60, a 37.8% margin and a 136.0% ROI on the item cost. The break-even price is $16.00, and a 25% margin needs a price of $24.34.
Now take an apparel item priced at $22 with free shipping that costs $8, with a $5 label and $1 of packaging. It sits in the top bracket, so the fee is 15% × $22.00 = $3.30 and profit is $4.70, a 21.4% margin. The break-even price is $15.56, inside the 10% bracket, but the calculator also flags a window from $14.74 to $15.00 where the 5% rate makes the item profitable too. Finally, if Walmart fulfills the $32 home item and you enter an illustrative $6.00 WFS fee, with no shipping charged and no label to pay, total fees are $10.80, profit is $10.20 and the break-even price is $20.00.
Pricing tips for Walmart sellers
- Price around bracket edges. In apparel, baby, beauty and grocery, a total sales price just under a threshold can pay a much lower rate. Remember that shipping counts: $12.99 plus $2.99 shipping is $15.98, which is in apparel's 10% bracket.
- Free shipping or not, the fee is the same. Shipping is part of the total sales price, so moving it into the item price doesn't change the referral fee.
- Use high-ticket tiers. Jewelry, watches, furniture and electronics accessories charge less on the portion above their thresholds, so the effective rate falls as the price rises.
- Compare WFS with fulfilling orders yourself. Enter the WFS fee, then try again with your own label cost, and compare profit. Add storage to other costs if inventory sits for long.
- Price from margin. Use the target margin field rather than a fixed markup; it accounts for the percentage fee and any tier.
Common mistakes
- Calculating the referral fee on the item price and forgetting shipping and handling.
- Applying a whole-price bracket rate to only part of the price, or a portion tier to the whole price.
- Guessing the category. The category Walmart applies to your item decides the rate, so confirm it in Seller Center.
- Reusing another marketplace's percentages. Rates differ by platform and by category.
- Forgetting WFS storage, returns or advertising, which can erase a thin margin.
- Treating payout as profit before subtracting product, shipping and packaging costs.
Frequently asked questions
What are Walmart Marketplace referral fees?
Walmart charges a referral fee on each item sold as a percentage of the total sales price, which includes the item price, shipping and handling, gift wrap and other charges but not separately stated taxes. Most categories pay 15% or 8%, personal computers pay 6%, and several categories use price-based tiers. There are no setup or monthly fees.
How do Walmart's tiered referral fees work?
There are two kinds. In apparel, baby, beauty, grocery and outdoor power tools, the rate depends on the total sales price and covers the whole amount, so apparel at $15 or less pays 5% while apparel over $20 pays 15%. In jewelry, watches, electronics accessories, furniture, compact appliances and some collectibles, a higher rate applies to the first part of the price and a lower rate only to the portion above the threshold.
Does Walmart charge a referral fee on shipping?
Yes. The total sales price used for the referral fee includes the shipping and handling you charge the buyer, so the fee is the same whether you charge $5 shipping on a $30 item or offer free shipping on a $35 item. Shipping also counts toward the price thresholds in tiered categories.
Does the calculator include WFS fees?
It includes them as an input rather than a built-in table. Walmart Fulfillment Services fees depend on the item's weight, size and other factors and change over time, so enter the per-unit fulfillment fee from Walmart's WFS rate card or cost estimator. Storage and other WFS charges can be added to other costs.
Why does the calculator sometimes show a lower price window?
In categories where one rate applies to the whole price, a cheaper price in a lower bracket can be profitable even though prices just above the threshold are not. The calculator reports the lowest price from which every higher price reaches your goal, and it lists any lower price window, such as apparel at $15 or less, that also works.
Are these Walmart fees current?
The category rates were checked against Walmart Marketplace's pricing page and referral fee schedule in September 2026. Walmart can change rates and offers reduced referral fee incentives on some items, so confirm the rate for your item in Seller Center. If it differs, pick Other and enter your own rate.
